FAQ

Asphalt Intelligence analyzes aerial imagery to help screen for road surface that may require inspection. It calculates the difference between trafficked and untrafficked areas of road surface to estimate wear and fatigue, then it maps the results.

New users can register for free (no payment info required), then log in. You can begin immediately with InSight Viewer using open-source imagery and process 15 images for free, or Upgrade to a Pro Account to use InSight Pro Viewer to upload and analyze your own imagery.

Intro users can process up to 50 open-source images per month using InSight Viewer.
Pro users can process up to 200 images per month using InSight Pro Viewer, including any open-source imagery.
If you need more than 200 images per month, please email us or set up a meeting to discuss an enterprise plan.

No. Asphalt Intelligence runs in your browser.

InSight Viewer uses open-source imagery. It's all ready to go! InSight Pro Viewer is designed for user-supplied imagery, including georeferenced imagery prepared for analysis workflows. All images must use the file type geotiff (.tif) in EPSG 3857.

Yes. User-uploaded imagery should include geo reference information in EPSG 3857 so the algorithm can correctly calculate the trafficked and untrafficked areas.
Quick explanation:
EPSG 3857 is a common web mapping coordinate system (also called Web Mercator) used by platforms like Google Maps and most online GIS tools. A CRS (Coordinate Reference System) simply tells the system where your image sits on the earth and how to align it correctly. Using the correct CRS ensures your imagery lines up properly and produces accurate results.

The Training page page and QGIS resources provide guidance for preparing imagery and converting supported files into a usable format. Formatting your images in QGIS takes about 5 seconds with our free official Asphalt Intelligence QGIS Plugin.

Output calculates the difference between trafficked and untrafficked areas of road surface. It estimates how much more wear and fatigue the trafficked areas have than the untrafficked areas. Then it maps the results.

Yes. Outputs are designed to work with common platforms such as QGIS, ArcGIS, Civil3D, and OpenRoads Designer.

It takes seconds to identify an area of interest and process results.

No. Asphalt Intelligence is a screening tool intended to help users identify areas that may need closer review in the field.

Image quality, resolution, traffic, and any interference by shadows or vegetation all influence the final output.
